Union Jack

We are the men of Britain sir,
a funny little set.
Smile at our ways and pass us by
but never quite forget.
That if you push a British man
then Britain will push back.
A thousand years of nationhood
wrapped in a Union Jack.
Though small are we and few are we
we don't shrink from the fight.
Where other nations may use force
Great Britain will use Might.

A Shadow

I was awakened by a sound.
A shadow climbs the wooden stair.
There's something wicked this way bound.
Look, see there is a figure there.
In fear my heart begins to pound.
A knife shines in a torches glare.
I hide, I don't want to be found.
As evil wanders from its lair.

The Starbucks in the city

I sit at my favourite table
in the Starbucks in the city
and I find the inspiration
to compose this little ditty.

'cause my view is of the doorway
from my table in the center
and I see the many faces
of the people as they enter.

Faces anxious seeking respite
from the misery called shopping.
Faces glowing at the notion
of a Latte with cream topping.

Two folk sitting  for the first time
holding hands above the table
where their other friends can see that
they have 'couple' on the label.

There's the teenagers who lunch here
perched up high upon a barstool
never knowing how the adults
wish their teen selves had been that cool.

And one man who has a notebook
sitting looking every lunchtime
making notes and watching faces
setting it all down in rhyme.

A Shooting Star

A shooting star streaks bright across the sky
and ends without a sound in darkest night.
Ten million million miles it came to die
ten billion years gone in a flash of light.
Yet no one marks the passing of this star
this remnant of our solar systems's birth
that left its icy home and traveled far
but never reached the surface of the Earth.
All stars will fall and it is known that some
will penetrate our well of gravity.
It's certain that one day the star will come
that blots out light for all eternity.

It's certain that that star will come they say.
I hope that I won't be around that day.

You came to me

I'd had my spring, my summer, and my fall
but sown no seed nor harvested a crop.
I'd lived no life, I'd made no mark at all
no one would notice if my life should stop.
Until you came to me that winter's night
and turned my season round to summer's day.
You filled my life with hours of delight
and gave me much more than I could repay.
But then you left me standing on that shore.
My broken heart all bleeding on the sand.
Condemned to live, while you to glory soar.
Condemned to miss the hand that held my hand.

But I have lived, the memory is plain.
And in Elysium we'll meet again.
