We wish the world a happy year
while we attend the annual wake
at which, well fortified by beer
we tell the world what steps we'll take
to move us on in our career
or to improve ourselves and make
the world a better place. Sincere
when made but oh so soon to break
So each year starts with good intent
which fades before the passing night.
Each broken promise's descent
does our weakness of will indict.
But each dark cloud by light is rent
as from the darkness of this blight
the only way we can be sent
is up towards the shining light.
